Prince Atys answered his father with calm respect, but also with strong logic. He said that he did not blame Croesus for being afraid after such a terrible dream. Any father, he explained, would try to protect his son after seeing such a vision. Still, Atys believed his father had misunderstood the meaning of the dream.
He reminded Croesus of the exact words of the vision. The dream, Atys said, foretold that he would die by an iron weapon. Then he asked an important question. The king asked Adrastus to join the hunting party with Atys. His main duty would be to guard the prince carefully, especially if they faced danger on the road, such as robbers or other threats. Croesus also reminded him that it was honorable for a strong and noble man to seek glory through brave deeds, as his family had always done.
Adrastus Accepts with Heavy Feelings
Adrastus replied honestly to the king. He said that if Croesus had not personally asked him, he would have chosen to stay behind.
